CVUA Report on Allergens in Food 2022: "Gluten-Free" Foods Contained Significant Amounts of Gluten
In the four Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Offices (CVUAs) in Baden-Württemberg, a total of 1717 samples from different product groups were tested for undeclared allergens (e.g. peanut, soy, sesame) in 2022. Additionally, 145 samples declared as “gluten-free” were examined.
8 (5.5%) of the samples labeled as “gluten-free” had to be assessed as potentially harmful to health due to a substantial gluten content.
In foodstuffs that were not specifically marketed for allergy sufferers, undeclared allergens were detected in 10.9% of the samples. In 6.7% of the examinations, an allergen finding exceeded the respective evaluation threshold. In this case, there is a legal labeling requirement. Particularly affected were milk and egg proteins as well as mustard and hazelnut. Overall, no significant fluctuations in results were observed compared to previous years.
