CVUA: Unauthorized "Clean Labeling" in Meat Products - In BAV Newsletter 02/2014

As reported by the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) Stuttgart, in its service area, deodorized vegetable juice concentrate made from red and white beet as well as parsley extract powder are offered as "organic curing mixture."

According to the manufacturer, the preparations are to be used with a nitrate-reducing starter culture.

According to the CVUA's assessment, the deodorized vegetable juice concentrate in the recommended concentration has no seasoning or immediate coloring effect.

However, the extracts or extracts are to be used in production, especially in the reddening of meat products. In the CVUA's view, this aims to circumvent the use of nitrite curing salt or nitrate and the associated labeling.

The authority points out that the use of the preparations as intended by the manufacturers is inadmissible according to legislation and current case law.

Meat products manufactured in this way must not be placed on the market and therefore cannot be marketed as so-called "Clean Label" products.

According to the view of the Administrative Court of Hanover, such preparations are food additives that are not listed in the list of authorized substances under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008.
