CVUA Stuttgart: Residues and Contaminants in Fresh Fruit

The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office Stuttgart examined 618 samples of fresh fruit from conventional cultivation for pesticide and contaminant residues in 2020.

5.3% of the fruit samples showed an exceedance of the maximum levels. This proportion is slightly lower compared to previous years. However, the proportion of maximum level exceedances for chlorate has significantly decreased (2020: 0.3%; 2019: 2.7%). This is partly due to new, generally higher residue maximum levels. Overall, two samples showed a health-relevant exceedance of the maximum levels (pears from China, oranges from Uruguay).

Maximum level exceedances were mostly observed in fresh fruit from third countries, including Turkey, Vietnam, and Brazil. Exotic fruits (e.g., pomegranate, passion fruit, and papaya) and citrus fruits are particularly affected by maximum level exceedances.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct investigations for pesticides and contaminants. We provide fast and reliable results.
