Dioxins and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) in Food - Report by CVUA Freiburg

Dioxins and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) in Food - Report by CVUA Freiburg

At the latest since the “Dioxin Scandal“ in 2011, dioxins as industrial waste products have been known to many consumers. At that time, dioxins were found among others in eggs from chickens fed with contaminated feed.

Dioxins are persistent and harmful substances that accumulate in the environment and the food chain (especially in fat). Maximum levels for dioxins and dioxin-like compounds have been established in the Contaminants Regulation.

In 2021, 592 food samples were tested for dioxins and PCBs by CVUA Freiburg.

Hen Eggs

75 samples of hen eggs were tested, revealing an average content of 0.6 pg WHO-PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ/g fat. In five cases (7%), the maximum level of the Contaminants Regulation was exceeded.

Meat and Liver

A total of 126 samples were tested in this category. Here, the maximum level was exceeded by only one sample (<1%).

Other Food Products

In 2021, samples of fish, milk and dairy products, and plant-based foods examined showed only low levels of dioxins and PCBs, with the detected levels being significantly below the applicable maximum and trigger values.
