Outbreaks of illness due to contaminated food are decreasing

Annual Report 2021: The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety BVL and Robert Koch Institute RKI report fewer foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany. Most are caused by Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella.

A total of 168 foodborne disease outbreaks with at least 1179 illnesses were reported to the RKI and BVL. There were at least 196 hospitalizations and 2 deaths associated with these outbreaks.
38% of the outbreaks were attributed to the pathogen Campylobacter spp. Salmonella was responsible for 36% of the outbreaks. For another 7%, noroviruses were identified as the cause, and for 4%, Bacillus cereus was identified as the cause. Numerous other pathogens accounted for 2% of the cases or less.
