Diseases caused by Salmonella Agona in five European countries
From five European countries, a total of 147 cases were reported, in which individuals were infected with strains of Salmonella Agona – 122 cases have occurred since the beginning of 2017, and the remaining 25 were retrospectively determined between 2014 and 2016.
The number of infected individuals is distributed among the affected countries as follows: United Kingdom (129), Finland (15), Denmark (1), Germany (1), and Ireland (1).
Based on the available information, experts from the EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) suggested that ready-to-eat products containing cucumbers, prepared in the United Kingdom, might be the source of the infection. However, they were unable to identify the specific point in the production chain where contamination occurred.
The experts warned that new cases could occur until the source of the infection and the specific contamination point in the production chain are determined.
