A study published in France at the beginning of the year reported on the risks of using sunscreens that have expired and contain the UV filter octocrylene.

Octocrylene is approved as a UV filter in cosmetics according to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. However, this substance is being discussed in the media due to possible properties as an endocrine disruptor.

The current study detected the compound benzophenone in aged sun protection products with octocrylene. This may possibly be a degradation product of octocrylene.

Benzophenone itself can potentially cause rashes or inflammations when applied to the skin.

Further studies will need to determine the extent to which there is actually a risk to consumers.
