Draft: New Guideline for Vegan and Vegetarian Products
The German Food Commission has presented a guideline draft for vegan and vegetarian products to associations and federal states for comment.
A ban on traditional names for meat substitute products is not envisaged in this draft, i.e., "vegetarian schnitzel" can still be labeled as such. However, the products must be labeled as "vegan" or "vegetarian" in the main field of view. The substitute ingredient must also be mentioned in connection with the name of the food, e.g., "schnitzel based on soy." Names referring to animal species or specific meat cuts, such as filet or steak, are to be prohibited.
Associations and federal states have until September 22 to comment on this draft. Adoption of the guidelines for vegan and vegetarian products is planned for the end of the year.
