E. coli outbreak at fast food chain in the USA

Escherichia coli is a widespread inhabitant of the intestines in humans and animals. E. coli is regularly detected in raw foods of animal origin. However, this bacterium is also commonly detectable in raw plant-based foods because it can survive in the environment for an extended period. The occurrence of these bacteria should, however, be significantly reduced through appropriate hygiene measures, as they are an important hygiene indicator, and pathogenic Escherichia coli strains exist that can cause severe food poisoning.

In several US states, people have fallen ill with E. coli after visiting a fast-food chain. The fast-food chain suspects that the problem lies with an onion supplier. In total, about 50 cases have been reported in ten states, including one fatality. Colorado and Nebraska are particularly affected.

At the BAV Institute, we regularly conduct tests for Escherichia coli. We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on all questions of product safety. Our customer advisors are available to assist you with any inquiries.
