ECJ-judgment:Nutritionalinformationofpreparedproducts

The nutritional information on the labeling of food products may only refer to the prepared food under certain conditions. This was decided by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in its ruling of 11.11.21. The issue was a lawsuit filed by the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) against a food manufacturer. This manufacturer had indicated the nutritional information on the front of one of its muesli products based on the prepared product. The final ruling of the Federal Court of Justice is still pending.

According to the decision of the ECJ, nutritional information based on the prepared product is only permissible if preparation is required and the method of preparation is specified for the food product. The aim is to ensure the comparability of food products and the information provided to consumers.
