EFSA statement on health risks from the mycotoxin moniliformin

Moniliformin (MON) is a mycotoxin primarily produced by molds of the genus Fusarium. It predominantly occurs in cereals and sometimes also alongside other Fusarium toxins.

In March 2018, EFSA published an opinion on the health risks for humans and animals posed by this mycotoxin in food and feed (EFSA Journal 2018; 16(3):5082).

The toxicity data can be found in this report. According to EFSA, there is generally a low health risk for humans from Moniliformin (MON). However, the uncertainties in the risk assessment are currently high, and further toxicity studies need to be conducted.
