EFSA provides guidance for food manufacturers on the expiration date

After opening a food package, pathogens can enter the food due to contamination - for example, caused by insufficient hygiene practices by the consumer - and thus affect the safety of the product.

Given numerous influencing factors such as the product composition, determining a consumption period after the package is opened is very complex.

To assist food manufacturers in deciding whether the consumption period after opening may be shorter than the originally specified expiration date, experts from the EFSA have developed a decision tree.

You can find this decision tree at the following link: www.efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com

If you have questions or require further information, our customer service representatives are happy to assist you.
