EFSA publishes risk assessment on food insects
The European Commission has requested the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to publish a risk assessment on dried larvae of the yellow mealworm intended to be used as food.
According to EFSA, considering the intended use and quantity, food insects are deemed not to be nutritionally concerning.
However, there is a risk that consumers who are allergic to crustaceans or mites may also react to the proteins of the yellow mealworm. Additionally, allergy through the feed consumed by the insects is conceivable.
For this reason, EFSA recommends checking the allergenic potential of these food insects.
