Egg liqueur may now contain milk after all
As of October 25, 2018, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that "eggnog" must not contain milk, but should only be made from high-quality egg yolk and egg white, as well as sugar or honey (eur-lex.europa.eu). This is no longer the case since June 2019.
Through the revision of the Spirits Regulation (formerly Regulation (EC) No. 110/2008) to Regulation (EU) No. 2019/787, the composition of eggnog is also newly defined. In addition to the ingredients mentioned above, a splash of milk or cream is now allowed, making the typically creamy eggnog a bit more fluid and consequently easier to drink. This differentiates from homemade recipes that have always relied on the addition of milk, cream, or even condensed milk, as opposed to industrial production. It is not expected that only eggnog with milk will be available on the market in the future. Both the legally regulated minimum content of egg yolk and alcohol, as well as the obligation to label milk as an allergen, remain in place.
Our partner laboratories routinely test for milk protein, lactose, egg, sugar, and alcohol content.
