Eight deaths due to listeria outbreaks in Denmark
Denmark is currently plagued by a series of unsolved listeria outbreaks.
In the three listeria outbreaks, nearly 30 people have fallen ill, eight of whom died.
Listeria are widespread in the environment and can be detected on plants, in sewage systems, and in the feces of healthy and sick animals. They are often found in raw foods (e.g., meat, poultry, milk, vegetables, fish, and seafood), but are also significant in processed foods (e.g., meat products, smoked fish products, mixed salads).
These bacteria can cause very serious diseases, especially in pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and sick individuals. The proportion of deaths that occur is relatively high in these individuals. In the current cases in Denmark, all the dead had pre-existing conditions.
