ExceptionListOfTheEUCouncil-ProtectedDesignation"Milk"AllowedFor"CoconutMilk"
According to Annex VII of Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013 on a common organisation of the markets in agricultural products, designations such as "milk," "butter," or "cheese" are reserved for foods of animal origin and must not be used on purely plant-based products.
However, there is an exception list of designations listed in Commission Decision 2010/791/EU dated December 20, 2010. These are designations of products whose type is precisely known due to their traditional usage, and/or when the designations are clearly used to describe a characteristic property of the product. Examples include "coconut milk," "cocoa butter," "meat cheese," "peanut butter," or "fish milk."
