Fat indices in cosmetic products
Fat index values are used for quality control and characterization of oils and fats, primarily in the area of cosmetic raw materials, but also for cosmetic end products such as massage oils, body butter, etc.
In the context of stability testing of cosmetic products ((requirement of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 as well as part of the safety report)) and the question of shelf life (best before date, PAO), fat index values are important parameters.
Usually, the acid value (AV) and the peroxide value (PV) are determined. The AV is used to determine acidic components (mostly free fatty acids) in fats and oils. The higher this is, the lower the quality of the fat or oil.
The PV, on the other hand, is an index for the content of peroxidic functional groups. It can be used to assess fat spoilage.
The BAV Institute and its Tentamus laboratory partners carry out the corresponding tests for you and measure the acid value and peroxide value in cosmetic raw materials as well as cosmetic end products.
We also determine other fat indices such as the iodine value (IV) or saponification value (SV) for you.
