An online platform has been created, led by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, to combat food waste. www.lebensmittelwertschätzen.de presents best-practice examples from the food trade and industry, as well as for consumers, and provides checklists and calculation tables.
11 million tons of food are thrown away in Germany every year by the industry, large consumers, trade, and private households. The waste affects the entire food sector.
"The new internet platform is an important network of all existing initiatives," says Federal Minister of Food Christian Schmidt. "Together, we are working on forward-looking solutions to achieve an appreciative handling of food and thus also promote sustainable consumption." Whether edible landscapes, new product ideas, or associations and initiatives – the new website already showcases 80 concrete activities for the entire value chain. The contributions are distributed across the four main areas of production, trade, out-of-home catering, and society. Contact and participation opportunities are shown – filterable by regions. More and more actions are to be added. For practical purposes, the site provides tools for waste prevention such as checklists, calculation tables, and training materials. They can be filtered by keywords, categories, and formats. The content partly originated from the "Avoid Food Waste" project of FH Münster, and as part of the initiative "Too good for the bin!"
