Foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany

Since 2015, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) have been publishing an annual report on foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany. The report is based on collected data from health and food monitoring authorities as well as from state authorities.

In 2017, 389 foodborne disease outbreaks were reported to the RKI and the BVL. In this context, there were at least 2277 illnesses and 4 deaths.

The disease outbreaks were caused 38% by Campylobacter spp. and 34% by Salmonella. The largest share, 33%, was accounted for by Campylobacter enteritis outbreaks. These are mainly caused by the consumption of unpasteurized raw milk. The sources of contamination are usually identified as the household or hygiene deficiencies.

The detailed annual report can be accessed at www.bvl.bund.de.
