"Food Clarity" celebrates its 6th anniversary
The introduction of the homepage "Lebensmittelklarheit" at www.lebensmittelklarheit.de took place six years ago. It is an initiative by consumer associations to publicly address and discuss consumer complaints regarding the presentation of food products. This internet portal is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Cases posted online relate to legal grey areas: labels or presentations that might not be considered misleading or deceptive in court under current law, but where consumer perception of deception is understandable from the consumer association's perspective.
Some facts about "Lebensmittelklarheit":
- The website logs about 90,000 visits per month
- On average, 11 products are reported weekly due to deceptive packaging and labeling. Since the portal's launch, over 10,000 products have been reported
- In a relatively high portion of the reported products, manufacturers change the presentation or labeling following the complaint. Currently, the change rate is about 34%
According to our observations, the introduction of "Lebensmittelklarheit" has had no significant consequences for food companies overall. Compared to consumer magazines like "Stiftung Warentest" and "ÖKO-Test", "Lebensmittelklarheit" receives less attention. Nevertheless, as a food company, one should not lose sight of this controversial and government-sponsored "consumer information and transparency initiative" by the consumer association.
