"Food Fraud": Consumer Protection Minister criticizes false labeling
Incorrect information about, for example, freshness or ingredients of food was also a major problem in 2017. Lower Saxony's Consumer Protection Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast (CDU) criticizes this food fraud (food fraud), which was uncovered through inspections as part of the consumer protection report.
The inspections were carried out by the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES). More than 62,000 unannounced visits were conducted in Lower Saxony supermarkets, slaughterhouses, ice cream parlors, and restaurants. The results were unsatisfactory in half of the cases.
Apart from the criticism regarding consumer protection, Otte-Kinast also holds consumers accountable. Too much food is thrown away, over 80 kilograms per capita annually. This amount is to be halved by 2030, and the minister announced a catalog of measures.
Nonetheless, she spoke positively about the year 2017: "Looking back on 2017, thankfully far-reaching scandals in health consumer protection were averted."
