In the CVUAs Baden-Württemberg, numerous meat products such as goulash, sausages, and döner kebab, ready-made meals containing meat, and dairy products like cheese were tested for authenticity, i.e., the agreement of the declared and contained animal species, in 2021. These included samples from the gastronomy, retail trade, and samples collected from manufacturers, such as butchers. The main intention in checking for adulteration or mislabeling of such products is to protect consumers from deception and misleading information.
Of the total 657 samples examined, 37 (5.6%) of the samples showed striking results. More than half (54%) of these came from the gastronomy, but most complaints were made about the ready-made meals, which accounted for 10.1% of the striking results.
Frequently mentioned examples with contradictory results included meat skewers that consisted of different animal species than indicated, as well as "Feta" cheese made from cow's milk. The protected designation "Feta" is reserved for cheese made from sheep's and, if applicable, goat's milk.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct testing for animal species. We provide you with fast and reliable results. Our customer consultants are very happy to answer any questions you may have.
