Food infections in Germany and Europe

Reported foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany are submitted by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). This data is then consolidated and forwarded to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Corresponding figures from other EU countries are also reported to the EFSA. A corresponding report is prepared based on this information.

In 2017, a total of 389 officially reported foodborne outbreaks were reported in EU countries, resulting in at least 2,277 illnesses, 412 hospitalizations, and four deaths.

The most common pathogen responsible for these outbreaks was Campylobacter (38%). Other significant pathogens included Salmonella (34%), norovirus (5%), VTEC/STEC (3%), Hepatitis A viruses (2%), and Hepatitis E viruses (2%).
