Fragrance ingredient Lilial (Butylphenyl Methylpropional) repeatedly in the Safety Gate

In the European Rapid Alert System Safety Gate, there are frequent reports regarding the fragrance Butylphenyl Methylpropional (common name: Lilial). This substance has been banned for use in cosmetics since 2022. Its use is no longer permitted according to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

The reporting of cosmetics containing this fragrance in the European Rapid Alert System leads to a recall or withdrawal from the market. For companies, this is usually associated with high costs and damage to their reputation.

In addition to Lilial, the fragrances Lyral (INCI name: Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxyaldehyde), Atranol, and Chloratranol are prohibited. They are listed in Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

We recommend testing your products for fragrances, including Lilial and other prohibited substances, as part of a screening. This is particularly important when importing products from third countries.

We check for all these substances and also analyze the newly regulated fragrances according to Regulation (EU) No 2023/1545.

By the way: With the entry into force of Regulation (EU) No 2023/1545, from July 31, 2026, no cosmetics that do not comply with this new regulation may be placed on the market for the first time. For all other products, July 31, 2028, will be the cut-off date. After this, no cosmetics that do not meet the new fragrance labeling requirements may be sold.
