France passes bill to reduce PFAS exposure

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are organic compounds in which the hydrogen atoms are completely (perfluorinated) or partially (polyfluorinated) replaced by fluorine atoms. Due to their resistance to numerous external influences and their water and fat-repellent properties, they are used intentionally. At the same time, they are extremely difficult to remove from the environment and are therefore also referred to as "forever pollutants".

On April 4, 2024, the French National Assembly passed a draft law aimed at restricting the production and distribution of products containing PFAS.

From January 1, 2026, the production, import, and sale of all cosmetics, wax products (for skis), and textile clothing products, except clothing for security and civil protection personnel, containing these chemicals will be prohibited.

Similarly, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published a draft ban in 2023, moving towards comprehensive PFAS restrictions.
