16.05.2025
On January 1, 2025, new regulations for the marketing of fresh fruits and vegetables, bananas, dried fruits (including dried grapes), and nuts will come into force. The existing Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 543/2011 will be replaced by the Delegated Regulation (EU) No. 2023/2429 and the Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 2023/2430.
An overview of the most important changes:
- Mandatory country of origin labeling for various product groups, especially for dried fruits and nuts as well as ready-to-use products
- Special regulation for dried grapes: here, only the obligation to indicate the country of origin remains.
- Expanded regulation for direct sales from the farm
- Expanded regulation for online and mail-order sales (distance selling) of fruits and vegetables
Fresh fruits and vegetables—whether loose or packaged—must bear an indication of origin. For packaged, unprocessed goods, this is done on the label, and for loose goods, at least on the box or a clearly visible sign.
Previously, ready-to-use products such as sliced fruits (e.g., fruit snacks), chopped vegetables (e.g., grated carrots), or prepared salad mixes did not require an indication of origin. From January 1, 2025, however, this will also be mandatory for such products—as well as for packaged nuts and seeds.
For mixed products such as trail mix, providers will have two options in the future: They can either indicate the country of origin for each individual component or alternatively label the origin as "EU," "non-EU," or "EU and non-EU." The latter option is considered less consumer-friendly as it does not provide precise information about the origin of the individual components.
