“In the past 25 years, I have not experienced a comparable event,” says Rainer Moritz, head of the Office for Agriculture in Offenburg. For many businesses, the sub-zero temperatures after the warm temperatures in March mean “a moderate catastrophe,” as what had already sprouted or blossomed has, in some areas, been completely frozen. The damage spectrum also ranges between “five and 100 percent” in Poland, Italy, and France. In addition to fruit trees and vines, corn plants and nuts have also been severely damaged. Higher raw material prices are already expected in the late year.
