Fruit teas in the Ökotest - Analysis for pesticides, ochratoxin A, cadmium, lead, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids

In the March 2022 issue of Öko-Test, 20 non-flavored fruit teas were tested. Of these, 15 teas carry an organic label and 5 come from conventional production.

The following test parameters were examined:

·         Residue analysis of pesticides

·         Ochratoxin A

·         Heavy metals: lead and cadmium

·         Tea blends with herbal components: pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA)

Pesticide residues were detected in 7 tested products. Of these, two pesticides (carbaryl and chlorpyrifos) are no longer approved in the EU. Additionally, residues of glyphosate and cypermethrin were detected.

Concerning the remaining test parameters Ochratoxin A, the heavy metals lead and cadmium, and the pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), no abnormalities were found.
