Fun in the Water for Children - an Assessment by the CVUA Karlsruhe – Safety according to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009
The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) in Karlsruhe examined a total of 28 bathing products specifically for children in terms of compliance with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 and the Food and Feed Code (LFGB) regarding the likelihood of confusion with food.
A sensory test was initially used to evaluate whether the examined product smelled strongly like a food or at least reminded one of it. If this was the case, it was checked whether the relevant product was salt-based (ingredients: Maris Sal or Sodium Chloride) and appropriate bittering agents were added (such as Denatonium Benzoate) to promote immediate spitting out.
Additionally, the packaging was checked for child safety.
The consumption of larger amounts of salt is particularly dangerous for young children. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and damage to brain tissue can be the result.
Conclusion: 23 out of 28 products were classified as safe.
Nevertheless, the following recommendation applies: The products should only be used under adult supervision and kept out of the reach of children when not in use to avoid a potential health risk.
