Furocoumarins - changes under the 52nd Amendment of the IFRA Standards - Safety reports
Since the beginning of the year, furocoumarins have been newly regulated in Switzerland. The cumulative limit for eight furocoumarins in cosmetic products potentially exposed to sunlight and remaining on the skin is 1 mg/kg.
With the 52nd amendment, the IFRA Standards (International Fragrance Association) are now following suit. In the future, IFRA-relevant furocoumarins will only include the following eight substances, modeled after Switzerland:
- Byakangelicol
- Epoxy-Bergamottin
- Isopimpinellin
- 5-Methoxypsoralen [5-MOP, Bergapten]
- 8-Methoxypsoralen [8-MOP, Methoxsalen, Xanthotoxin]
- Oxypeucedanin
- Oxypeucedanin hydrate
- Psoralen
In contrast to Switzerland, the future IFRA cumulative limit will be 5 mg/kg. Also new is the introduction of an IFRA cumulative limit for rinse-off products such as soap or shampoo. This limit will in the future be set at 50 mg/kg. This value will also be applied to oral products in the future.
This re-regulation is especially relevant when preparing safety reports according to Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 and must be taken into account. Our Regulatory Affairs team supports you with years of experience and prepares all safety reports in compliance with these new requirements.
We perform the detection of the listed substances quickly and reliably for you. Low determination limits ensure compliance with cumulative limits.
