Burkholderia cepacia germ in cosmetics can become a health hazard

The detection of the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia in cosmetic products can lead to a serious threat to consumer health. This is usually associated with public recalls as well as reports via various rapid alert systems.

Burkholderia cepacia is a bacterium that lives in water and soil. The germ is particularly dangerous because it is resistant to many common antibiotics. The presence of this germ or other potentially pathogenic water germs in cosmetics is therefore to be critically monitored. Regular microbiological tests (among other things in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17516), checks of raw materials and production water, as well as adequate hygiene conditions, can provide a remedy.

Further information about Burkholderia cepacia can also be found in the BAV profile.
