Guidelines for Vegan and Vegetarian Foods with Similarities to Foods of Animal Origin

The German Food Code Commission (DLMBK) adopts "Guidelines for vegan and vegetarian foods similar to foods of animal origin".

The guidelines refer to vegan and vegetarian foods that are named after already established terms from the "Guidelines for Meat and Meat Products", the "Guidelines for Fish, Crustaceans and Molluscs and Products thereof", as well as the "Guidelines for Delicatessen Salads" and are labeled as such.

The guidelines set out assessment criteria to determine whether a vegan or vegetarian food can assume names or references to the names of the "reference food" or whether this is not possible.

The publication of the new guidelines is scheduled to take place later this year.

It is still debatable whether, as announced, there could really be changes in the labeling and presentation of certain vegan and vegetarian foods, even if these products have been on the market for some time without complaints.
