Health Risks of Sunscreens - Questions and Answers from the BfR

The summery temperatures and a brilliantly blue sky are increasingly inviting us to spend time outdoors these days. To protect the skin from sunburn, reaching for sunscreen is the appropriate action.

The UV filters contained therein, responsible for protection against UV rays, are constantly a topic of heated discussion. Thus, consumers ask themselves: Are the UV filter substances used in them a health risk? How is the nanoparticle titanium dioxide to be assessed? Are sunscreens even tested?

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has compiled the most important questions and answers about the health risks of sunscreens.
According to the current state of scientific knowledge, health impairments from UV filters in sunscreens available in the European Union are not to be expected, as these are previously tested and evaluated for health risks. Furthermore, maximum levels for UV filters in sunscreens are set in Annex VI of the Regulation EC No. 1223/2009 (EU Cosmetics Regulation).

Have your sunscreen products tested for compliance with the current requirements regarding permissible UV filters. The BAV Institute, as part of the international Tentamus Laboratory Group, checks these for you quickly and reliably.
