In the USA, 16 cases of hepatitis have been reported. According to official reports from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the source of the infection is fresh blackberries from a fruit and vegetable store. Nine people have been treated in the hospital so far. Since the blackberries have been delivered to multiple markets in eleven states, the State Nutrition Center issued a warning to avoid consuming fresh blackberries harvested in September.

Hepatitis A viruses can be contracted through any contaminated food and drinking water. Shellfish, oysters, as well as fruits and vegetables, are considered particularly risky.
