How Safe is Vegan Ice Cream?
Vegan Ice Cream is enjoying a wide consumer base and is becoming increasingly popular. It is very attractive to vegetarians, vegans, and people affected by lactose intolerance.
The production of vegan ice cream is based on oat, coconut, rice, or almond milk, thereby excluding cow's milk, the conventional ingredient of ice cream production.
The result of the twelve ice cream varieties examined was mainly positive in terms of sensory analysis. However, some samples showed residues of mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH), pesticides, and other health-impairing substances.
Some of the samples showed strongly elevated MOSH levels, which can demonstrably accumulate in adipose tissue, the liver, the spleen, and lymph nodes. Mineral oil hydrocarbons have shown in animal experiments that they can cause organ damage and should therefore not be consumed. Additionally, multiple residues of pesticides and the fungicide Captan, which has carcinogenic properties, were found. It is used against fungi and scab in pome fruits.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct analyses on MOSH and pesticides. For questions, our customer advisors are very happy to assist you.
