The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a risk assessment regarding the outbreaks of salmonella. Since January 2019, 121 cases of salmonella infections linked to sesame-based products have been reported in five EU/EEA countries. Almost half of the cases involve children under the age of 10, who also make up the majority of hospital cases. No deaths have been reported in this context.
Tracing has revealed that the infection carriers mainly stem from sesame products imported from Syria. Since August 2020, control measures have been implemented, but they have not yet prevented the occurrence of cases in sesame-based products.
