In December, the SCCS (Scientific Committee of the EU Commission) published a new opinion on the absorption of aluminum through cosmetic products. In this assessment, new data from studies on test subjects regarding skin absorption are published.

The committee concludes that aluminum-containing cosmetic products do not pose a health risk (Regulation (EC) 1223/2009). Absorption occurs mainly through food or food contact materials.

The BfR will review the new data from the SCCS and, if necessary, perform a scientific reassessment for aluminum-containing cosmetics (antiperspirants, toothpaste).

Further information and the BfR's opinion can be found at www.bfr.bund.de and ec.europa.eu.
