Ice cream and cream still in focus - In BAV Newsletter 03/2013

During examinations of ice cream and cream, various state authorities found hygiene and labeling deficiencies. In Hesse, 16% of ice cream samples and 66% of cream samples were criticized due to excessive germ counts. Other inspection offices mainly found labeling deficiencies in ice cream. In Rhineland-Palatinate, almost 50% of the examined milk ice cream samples contained vegetable fats, even though the addition of vegetable fats to milk ice cream is not permitted. Regarding the ongoing issue of "vanilla," only 35% of the products were correctly labeled. In Lower Saxony, it was found that around 12% of samples from ice cream parlors lacked the warning "May affect activity and attention in children," which has been required for certain dyes since 2010.
