The German Food Association has advocated to the BMEL (Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture) and the EU Commission that no more be demanded in the current crisis situation than can currently be accomplished. Therefore, leniency should be applied to food companies in the compliance with labeling regulations.

The EU Commission has now published a letter making it clear that the necessary flexibility should be utilized, considering the safety of the products. This means that the responsible authorities, during inspections, should tolerate issues with labeling beyond the normal scope. This request should only be considered as long as it does not concern safety-relevant aspects such as allergen labeling.
