Which food category do vegan and vegetarian foods belong to?
With the publication of the "Guidelines for vegan and vegetarian foods with similarity to foods of animal origin," the question also arose as to which food category of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 these belong.
The Working Group of Food Chemical Experts has issued a draft on this topic. In this draft, vegan and vegetarian foods are classified into the category of the ingredient to be replaced, e.g., vegetarian ham substitutes based on egg whites into the category 12.9 Protein products.
The only applicable exception is found in replacement products for milk, as these are classified either into category 12.9 Protein products (e.g., soy drink) or into category 14.1.4 “flavored drinks” (e.g., vanilla oat drink).
Vegetarian and vegan products similar to dairy products, cheese, or butter fall under category 01.8 Dairy product analogs.
