Increase in EHEC Cases in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern there have recently been increased reports of infections with EHEC (Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli). Children are particularly affected, with some having severe disease courses. The exact source of infection is not yet known.

In this situation, general hygiene measures are of particular importance:

Personal hygiene: Thorough handwashing and the consistent implementation of operational hygiene standards.

Food safety: Thoroughly cook meat products, wash fruits and vegetables well, and avoid cross-contamination.

Self-monitoring: Regular review of processes, procedures, and supply chains to minimize risk.

EHEC diseases often manifest with diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea. In severe cases, complications such as hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) can occur. Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are particularly at risk.

The health authorities are working hard to identify the source of the infection. Until then, prevention, hygiene, and care are the best protection.

Our customer advisors are happy to assist you with any questions regarding prevention and hygiene measures. Additionally, the BAV Institute offers suitable tests for food safety – including tests for EHEC/STEC.
