Informationfrom20thMeetingoftheBfRCommissionforCosmeticProducts
The protocol of the 20th meeting of the BfR Commission from October 2017 was recently published. The recommendations made here have an advisory character and provide valuable guidance in the evaluation and assessment of cosmetic products. In this meeting, statements were made on the following topics, among others:
- Mineral oils and waxes in lip care products
According to the recommendation of the cosmetic association Cosmetics Europe regarding the use of mineral oil in lip care products, only those oils and waxes should be used for which the EFSA has established an ADI (acceptable daily intake). For certain waxes, there is currently no ADI, and the transferability of studies to these products was discussed. Furthermore, there is a need for discussion concerning the detected levels of MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) in lipsticks. The committee still advocates for compliance with the recommendations of Cosmetics Europe.
- Requirements for castor oil used in cosmetics
In cosmetic products, refined castor oil is used, from which the highly toxic ricin has been removed by heating, but ricinine may still be detectable due to its heat stability. The currently available toxicological data are insufficient for an assessment of ricinine. To date, there are no specific quality requirements for the use of castor oil in cosmetics. The BfR recommends minimizing the ricinine content and measuring the levels in the raw material.
