Examination of chicken eggs for Salmonella in Lower Saxony

Examination of chicken eggs for Salmonella in Lower Saxony

In 2017, a total of 379 chicken eggs were tested at the Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover (LVI BS/H) at the Hannover location, with a sample usually consisting of 10 eggs. The samples consisted of 227 planned samples, three follow-up samples, and 149 suspicious samples.

In 2 planned samples, salmonella were detected on the shell from a Lower Saxony egg packing station. A total of 149 samples from eight different operations were examined in the suspicious samples. At one of these operations, 16 suspicious samples were taken. This involved an egg packing station with an attached egg product plant. Salmonella was detected in five of the 16 samples. In one sample on the shell and in the yolk, in two samples on the shell, and in two other samples in the yolk. At another of the eight operations, ten suspicious samples were taken. In these samples, the shell was positive seven times, and once both yolk and shell.

The tests show that salmonella contamination in raw eggs is still an important issue.
