Investigation of gel nail polishes: Dangerous substances and labeling deficiencies identified
Results of the Examination
The analysis showed that many of the tested gel nail polishes do not comply with legal standards. Only one of the 28 examined products met all the requirements. Serious deficiencies were found in the remaining products, which in many cases even led to a sales ban. The following deficiencies were particularly common:
- Use of unauthorized colorants and dyes
- Exceeding of permissible limits for stabilizers and photoinitiators
- Contamination with carcinogenic nitrosamines
- Missing or inadequate warning labels on packaging
These deficiencies pose a potential health risk, particularly because the products—although originally intended for commercial use—are easily available over the internet and thus can also be used by private individuals. This could lead to allergic reactions and further health complications.
Risks for Consumers and Improper Use
Although the products are originally intended for commercial use, their availability to private individuals is a serious issue. Especially the improper use of gel nail polishes, as performed by amateurs in private households, can lead to serious health problems. This particularly concerns the chemical residues and improper handling of the products, which can result in harmful health effects in the worst case.
Recommendations of the BAV
In view of the numerous violations and potential dangers, the BAV urgently advises paying attention to the quality and reliability of suppliers when purchasing cosmetic products—especially gel nail polishes. It is recommended to inform oneself in advance about the origin and manufacturer information of the products. In case of doubt, products that are not properly labeled or whose origin appears questionable should not be purchased over the internet.
The BAV emphasizes that consumers can contact the responsible authorities at any time if they have any uncertainties. Furthermore, residues and prohibited substances are checked in the BAV laboratories to ensure the safety of cosmetic products on the market.
