Judgment: No "Top Quality" when Using Broken Goods - In BAV Newsletter 01/2014
An updated court ruling concerned various meat products (scalded sausages) that were marketed as "premium quality" but were manufactured using so-called breakage goods, i.e., previously heated sausage meat. The food authorities considered this misleading to consumers.
According to the guidelines for meat and meat products, premium quality is characterized, among other things, by the selection of the raw materials. The judges were of the opinion that in terms of the quality of the final product, it can no longer be referred to as using the best or particularly selected raw materials when manufacturing products using breakage goods. Sausage meat made from chopped raw meat with the addition of drinking water and salts is not identical to previously heated, re-chopped sausage meat.
