Following the recall of Erborian Centella face cream due to missing preservatives and microbiological contamination, expert agencies point out the importance of preventive testing. The Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) recommended not using the affected products after microorganisms such as Candida parapsilosis, Micrococcus luteus, and Microbacterium oxydans were detected.

The BAV Institute offers testing procedures to evaluate the microbiological stability of cosmetic products. This includes the preservative challenge test (PCT) according to DIN EN ISO 11930, where products are specifically tested with microorganisms and the germ counts are monitored over several weeks. Additionally, the contained preservatives can be analyzed to ensure effectiveness and legal compliance.

Regular quality controls before and after production can help detect microbiological contamination early and ensure the safety of cosmetic products. Manufacturers are encouraged to use such examinations as part of their quality management.
