Lipsticks under Test

In the current issue of the magazine Stiftung Warentest (November issue), a total of 17 lipsticks were closely examined.

The following questions were particularly focused on:

Are saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH) present in the products, which in turn may contain the so-called aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH) as impurities? Is titanium dioxide included in the lipsticks? Do the lipsticks contain heavy metals?

MOAH may contain components that can be carcinogenic. Since May 2021, titanium dioxide has been classified as no longer safe by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). There is evidence that the substance shows mutagenic effects when consumed.

The result was: on average, satisfactory to inadequate. A downgrade mainly occurred due to increased MOAH levels, but also because of titanium dioxide. Especially for lip care products, the content of concerning MOAH should be as low as possible, as on average approximately 20g of the product is swallowed and orally absorbed annually, according to the scientific committee of the EU (SCCS).

In our Tentamus Laboratories, we regularly conduct these tests.

We provide you with fast and reliable results.
