Listeria detected in enoki mushrooms – recall raises questions

Listeria detected in enoki mushrooms – recall raises questions

A recent product recall of enoki mushrooms once again highlights the potential health risks posed by internationally traded foods. The pathogen Listeria monocytogenes was detected in the affected products. Additionally, it was criticized that the instruction for necessary thorough heating was only provided in English.

Notable is the discrepancy between the official warning on the platform www.lebensmittelwarnung.de, which is very detailed, and the comparatively brief recall notice from the affected Berlin distribution companies. The latter does not comply with the requirements of the official food surveillance guidelines.

It is also remarkable that the recall originates from the state of Berlin - a region that previously showed restraint in public product recalls.

The BAV Institute recommends that refrigerated mushroom products be tested not only for salmonella but also for Listeria monocytogenes as a general rule. Our customer advisors are available for further information and investigations.
