Listeria monocytogenes in Foods – Report on the Zoonosis Monitoring 2017
In 12.2% of samples of spreadable raw sausages, Listeria monocytogenes were detected. In two samples, levels of Listeria monocytogenes were measured that pose a potential health risk to humans (220 and 550 colony-forming units per gram - CFU/g). The results underscore the special importance of the self-controls of the food company. They also highlight the need to regularly control businesses that manufacture or market such foods within the framework of official monitoring.
The results also make it clear that spreadable raw sausages pose a risk for human infection with Listeria monocytogenes and therefore should not be consumed by vulnerable consumer groups such as young children, the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women. Infections with listeria occur less frequently compared to Salmonella and Campylobacter infections, but their severity makes them play an important role.
