The number of foodborne illnesses caused by Listeria monocytogenes is continuously increasing both in Germany and internationally (see also statistics at www.rki.de). Because listeriosis has an unusually high mortality rate of over 10% for food poisoning and is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and other sensitive populations, food companies must take numerous measures to avoid contamination with these pathogens (see also our data sheet on “Listeria monocytogenes”).
